Foster Creative asked some of our friends who create stunning wedding & elopement photo & video what they think the most important quality an elopement filmmaker can have.

Off the top of my head, I think empathy is SUPER important. To really dig into the emotion of the day and try your damndest to capture what it felt like. Not that you have to be weeping behind your camera or ruining audio with your own laugh, but you know, letting that understanding of the moment guide you in when to step in and shoot and when to step back and wait. Cuz, every single couple is different, and if you can just latch onto that for each shoot, you are letting the couple just worry about being, you know, the couple. | Benjamin Schaefer | Mann Frau

I think the most important quality you absolutely have to have as an elopement filmmaker, is the ability to elevate your couple’s experience on their elopement day. They don’t have their family and friends there to be excited for them, to cry with them, to celebrate their love and relationship. So you have to be invested in them and be that person. You’ve got to use your expertise to make sure things run smoothly, and make it feel like more than just a hike, or worse, just a video shoot. On a day where they probably have no idea what to do, you’ve got to have the answers to make it special. | Alex Clem | Vow of the Wild

I definitely think adaptability is key to a successful wedding videographer, or really any wedding professional. It’s the quality that will get you through a season of unexpected event changes, bad weather, poor lighting situations, a pandemic, tight timelines, anything you can think of.  Being adaptable however isn’t just a single skill - it’s knowing exactly what skills to pull out of the bag and when. It’s having an arsenal of skills that you could do in your sleep, and that you’re ready to utilize at any given moment — it's being really damn good at every aspect of your job on a technical level. You could be the friendliest person in the world, but if you’re not capable of quickly switching gears, you’re going to have a really difficult time in this industry. | Bree Wooliscroft | Bree Woolliscroft Fine Art Wedding Photography

The best quality a wedding filmmaker needs to have is a solid evaluation of the day as a whole in regards to what the story is to be told.  Identifying this idea for the couples story quickly and then executing the takes needed to piece together the final video is the most crucial skill set a wedding filmmaker can have. | Meg O’neill | Run Wild With Me
